Pomanders, usually perforated, were used as aromatic adornments or personal perfume balls, worn as a pendant hung from a neck chain or on a belt during the Medieval and Renaissance period. Pomanders were later developed into intricate vessels holding a variety of scents, often lavished with detailed fine filigree work and even adorned with precious stones.
